Looking for some wonderful ideas to create a shabby chic theme in your new kitchen?

Shabby Chic is a style that focuses on the comfortable, worn, good quality, well-loved, sensible and rather dilapidated elegance of an Italian villa. The air is of good taste, although well worn and old fashioned. To achieve an air of shabby-chic, you’ll need to find furniture that is distressed or rustic, simple and comfortable. Almost any piece of wooden furniture will fit into this kitchen if its painted white.

Collect pieces from garage sales, markets and attics, paint in either white or soft pastel colors (pink, mint green or soft aqua) and then sand it off a little to show the wood or other layers of paint beneath and to make it look older. You’ll be surprised at how beautiful and quaint it will look! Choose a large table and chairs for eating and preparing food on, a couple of dressers to display your plates, jugs and teapots, some raffia-seated stools, a large range cooker as your focal piece and you’ll have the core of your shabby chic kitchen. Use the same colors in fabrics – popular decor items are pillows of vintage linens or lace and cottons worn with age but of good quality, inspired by old French laces and linens.

Bleached and faded is the sort of ‘look’ that accompanies this style. To add a bit of vintage charm, look for old shelving and vintage open cabinets in place of new cabinets to hold vintage dishes and tea cups. Anything with roses printed on it is popular, and floral chintz curtains or sofas, go really well with large porcelain jugs of fresh flowers on lace tablecloths. For easy complementing of colors, perhaps pick a base color like ivory, and fit others around that. Shabby chic style allows for mismatched color and follows no hard and fast rules. Typically the cottage feel is defined through the use of lighter colors. Soft pastels convey country comfort, but when it comes to color, there are no hard and fast rules. As long as the exterior finish is worn, any colors may be used.

Other accessories in a shabby-chic kitchen would be silver chandeliers or candleholders, copper and pewter items such as candlesticks, cream jugs and gravy boats, that are displayed on open shelving with lots of crockery in whites and pale pastel colors. The decoration and detail is more important than the colors. Soft throw rugs or quilts can give a sense of warmth and comfort.  Wrought iron is a well-loved material that can be picked up at second hand shops quite cheaply.

There are stores that supply already distressed shabby-chic style furniture and accessories, but you’ll have more fun collecting your own pieces and painting them the colors you’d like to suit your taste.  Add an old-fashioned wood fire and you’ll have recreated your grandmother’s kitchen with flair and elegance, and the sophistication of the present.

Unlike your significant other, it prefers a dark, moist, cool place. Here’s how to create the perfect environment for your little pointy-headed loved ones. To complete this How-To you will need: A dark, moist, naturally cool space A thermometer A hygrometer A wine rack Insulation A humidifier or dehumidifier Step 1: Find a space Find a dark, cool space in your home. It could be an unused closet or a basement corner. Step 2: Install thermometer Install a thermometer to monitor room temperature. Ideally, wine needs to be kept between 55 and 58 degrees. Above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the wine will age too quickly; below 50 degrees, the wine will not mature. Tip: Protect the room—walls, floor, and ceiling—with insulation and seal drafts to stabilize the room temperature. Step 3: Measure humidity Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in the room. You want to keep the humidity between 60% and 70%. If the room is too dry, corks may dry out, allowing oxygen to seep into the bottle. Step 4: Adjust humidity Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to alter the humidity of the room

A crown canopy makes a dramatic statement in a room. Long fabric panels fall from under a valanced top section, making a sweep of color and style that is unforgettable.

A canopy bed may sound exotic and out of reach. But really, a canopy bed can be made with a simple swag of fabric or by constructing an elaborate draped treatment. This article about canopy beds will give you lots of ideas and pictures of simple and not-so-simple styles of canopy beds that will help to add romance to your bedroom.

The easiest way to create a simple canopy for your bed is to hang a piece of fabric over the top frame rails of a structured canopy bed. But if your bed doesn’t have a canopy frame, there are other ways to get the look of a canopy and to surround your bed in softness and color. You can achieve a very attractive canopy bed look by installing curtain rods to the ceiling, placing one over each end of the bed.

Using either tab-top, tie-top, pinch-pleated or gathered panels, attach the fabric to each curtain rod and let it drape softly to the floor. You can also attach a short rod to the ceiling, perpendicular to the head of the bed on each side. Hang the panels to the floor and tie back with a drapery tieback.

There’s really not anything that can make a bedroom feel romantic the way a canopy bed can. Our article shows many styles of canopies and bed hangings that can turn a ho-hum bedroom into something really spectacular.

A dramatic crown canopy, also called a coronet, looks elegant in any bedroom. Attach panels of fabric around the outer edge of a half-circle of 3/4″ plywood. This half-circle can be attached directly to the ceiling or floated just off the ceiling with L-brackets attached to the wall.

You can add a romantic look to a plain-Jane bed by draping long fabric panels through a wooden or metal ring attached to the ceiling above the center of the head of the bed.

Draw the fabric panel through the ring, pulling it down to the floor on either side of the bed. Spread the panels out to display more fabric and frame the bed or drape the panels around the bed posts at the head of the bed.

Another simple treatment is to install a ring on the ceiling at both sides of the head of the bed and draw the long fabric panel through both rings. Swag the area between the two rings at the ceiling to form a lush top frame for your bed.

The panels should extend to the floor on both sides of the bed. If you install 4 rings, one at each corner of the bed, try drawing a long panel of fabric through each one. Be sure one end of the panel at each ring goes all the way to the floor. With four panels of luxurious fabric draped above and down the sides of your bed, the look is very elegant.

You can really use any type of fabric you want to create a beautiful canopy bed. Traditional fabrics for canopies are chintz, silk, velvet,or tapestry. But you can achieve a fun look for a country setting with muslin or gingham or charming calico. You can also use sheets that coordinate with your bedding to construct the long panels for a uniform look.

For ease of use and simplicity of style, bed hangings are generally cut to touch the floor when hung. If you prefer a luxurious look, cut the panels 4″ longer and “puddle” the fabric on the floor at the edge of the bed. Be sure to lift the panel when you need to vacuum the floor.

For a truly professional look, more body, and longer wear, add lining to the panel of fabric or use a coordinating print or solid for the back of the panel. After all, the inside and outside of the panel will both show when you swag it. Add borders, fringe, ribbon trim, and cording. Coordinate trims with tiebacks, adding color, texture, and body. Remember that a tieback will pull the fabric off the floor, so cut the panels slightly longer.

Go on to see more views of beautiful canopy beds and swag treatments. You’re sure to see a style that will give a wonderful romantic look to your personal sanctuary.

Find a style of canopy bed that will fit your decorating style and budget and create a really romantic bedroom just in time for Valentine’s Day.

How to Create a Shabby Chic Kitchen

Shabby chic kitchens are now one of the most sought-after kitchen styles, in the modern world; especially in country properties. However it is not by any means a new look since it originally evolved in the mid-twentieth century, when it became a popular method of creating an acceptable and charming way of decorating as money was tight after the second world war.

The essential element that conjures up the shabby chic look is a timeless elegance where furniture does not have to match, just so long as all your pieces have an inviting, slightly worn look, and are closely related in colour or tone. True shabby chic in your kitchen should reflect the grace and beauty of a bygone era, when life was simpler and altogether more natural.

Shabby chic kitchen styles are characterised by a rural style comfort coupled with old world whimsy. The décor, which is normally based around white, off-white or very pale unobtrusive colours such as soft greens, pale blues, pale yellows or muted beiges, should look effortless and completely uncontrived.

Before setting about creating this well-loved style take a good look round your kitchen and consider the existing style in terms of wall colours, cabinets, appliances, work surfaces and even cookware. Also take note of the size and layout of the room to determine if there is enough floor space to accommodate additional pieces or the necessary wall space for additional cabinets or shelves. If not, begin thinking about how you could change the current look to achieve a more rustic feel. Newly painted walls and certain paint effects on furniture, along with the right accent pieces will help change the whole look your kitchen.

In the main most kitchen walls are best painted in plain or lightly toned white to maximise the amount of light, however for something a little more unusual you could also try painting your walls in a pattern of wide pastel and white stripes. If however you prefer wallpaper, to make your kitchen appear more homely, it is best to choose a muted floral pattern, especially roses or tiny bunches of daisies or forget-me-nots.

Do bear in mind though that endearing as old fashioned wallpaper can look it should not even be considered if your kitchen doesn’t have proper ventilation to stop it getting overly steamed-up when cooking; otherwise you will soon be re-papering!

Concrete, grotesquely tiled or tacky linoleum floors are a complete anathema to the shabby chic kitchen style so they will need to be replaced with something more in keeping with your new soft and natural look. This of course can be a major and expensive undertaking, so if you don’t want to completely replace your kitchen floor you can simply add lots kitchen mats or rugs in muted pink, blue, green, or floral designs; just be sure to choose colors that complement your walls and existing flooring.

Plain wooden floorboards can be given a new lease of life by being sanded and varnished to prevent splinters in bare feet! They can also be stained in a ‘natural’ wood colour but be careful that you don’t go too dark and make you kitchen feel grim and gloomy. Very pale wood may be stenciled in an interesting design before varnishing, but do ensure that the design ties in with your existing colour scheme. A clever floor design could be used to emphasise a special feature such as an old couch, a favourite rocking horse or a freestanding butcher’s block.

Kitchen furniture and cabinets can be decorated in a number of exciting paint finishes, which is then distressed in varying degrees depending on just how truly ‘shabby’ you want your kitchen to look. If you are not sure how to go about the distressing process simply dial up ‘How To Paint Shabby Chic Furniture’ on the internet and you will find plenty of information and even videos on Youtube.com that cover the subject in depth.

To avoid an overly modern look you should always replace any current hardware on kitchen cabinets and door furniture with something more appropriate, such as glass or vintage ceramic knobs; which will indeed look so much more authentic. You can often find just what you need on Ebay or you could try scouting round some of the more reputable building reclamation yards. Sometimes it is worth buying old cabinets or doors just to lay claim to stunning or unique door and cupboard accessories.

If your current kitchen appliances don’t look remotely right in your new kitchen, you can have them repainted to match everything else, as fortunately companies do exist that will repaint appliances. Alternatively, if you want to replace the appliances altogether, there are also companies that sell retro style appliances.

Don’t forget to give your kitchen a light and airy window treatment. Curtains, rather than blinds, are an excellent way to emphasise the shabby chic look especially dainty floral prints, held in place with antique tie-backs. For a cleaner, unfussy look you could also use cotton nets slung over pine poles or even pure lace, draped across just half the window.

Be aware that one of the joys of shabby chic style is that it utilises less than perfect pieces, so do check out jumble sales, garage sales and even skips for discarded items. Someone else’s rubbish may just be the perfect display piece for your shabby chic kitchen. A tart-up with a pretty paint finish or some floral material can give new life to many a neglected treasure.

The right accessories will simply ‘make’ your shabby chic kitchen so these should be chosen and placed very carefully to give the right effect. This stage of achieving the shabby chic look is rather like planting a country garden, in as much as it should all look entirely natural and as if it has just happened by chance.

However as any skilled gardener will tell you it takes quite a bit of forethought and planning to create just the right uncontrived look. Exactly the same will apply to your kitchen but, being careful not to over-clutter working space or surfaces, you can easily develop the shabby chic feel simply by applying a little imagination, time and effort and the best of all it won’t cost you a fortune.

Some really great additions to your kitchen can include distressed corner shelves for old battered recipe books, Victorian chamber pots for plants, early spice racks, embroidered hand-towels and homespun linen on wrought iron hooks, well-worn oven gloves, 1950’s tin canister sets and cookie cutters, granny’s wash board, sepia framed photos, Imperial kitchen scales, a rose patterned china tea service, vintage wooden boxes and serving bowls, old baking trays, copper pans, fish kettles and of course lots and lots of fresh flowers.

Finally do remember that the true shabby chic look is only achieved by being understated, so you don’t need to have every single item in your kitchen distressed, miss-matched or floral. Sometimes less is definitely more and it is also vital that your own personality comes into play to make your dream kitchen particularly special and unique to you.

The procedures this article discusses will be quite helpful to you as a homeowner, especially if you have been meaning to come up with your own window treatment on a large scale. There are couture techniques that can be studied by anyone – even if he’s not a couture expert.

This can be started by comprehending the fundamentals in the tried-and-tested workroom window treatment making techniques. Once you have mastered this, then you can create window treatments in a large space.

1. Color – Choose a scheme that will go well on a large area. This is the first step in the window treatment designing process. Decide on where you will put the focal point on that space you have in order for you to already set the mood and atmosphere. Fox example, red, peach and coral create a comfortable feel and it is quite easy to feel warm when the room is faces north.

2. Lines – The type of lines in the room set the feeling and the mood. Vertical lines add dignity and height. These are said to be appropriate for formal settings. Whereas horizontal lines are more casual and provide a restful feel. Therefore, these are perfect when there is a need for relief from bold features. Paneling and molding are always horizontal for that very reason. Diagonal lines attract attention but do not use it too much because this might result to the eye constantly following them – especially when you are designing window treatment for a large space.

3. Texture – The surface of the fabric also conveys mood. Denim, chenille and linen are used for casual settings while shiny, smooth silk and moiré are utilized for more formal spaces. The coarse and nubby textures absorb more light therefore creating shadows leading the colors to be darker. Shiny textures, on the other hand, reflect light and become lighter when approached closer.

4. Form – Lines that are joined together make shape. Rectangles are the most popular when it comes to window treatments especially in a large space. Tables and chairs can also be used in accentuating the whole are. You can make a square-shaped window better looking by attaching a sliding glass door unit. For rectangle windows, you can extend it visually by adding drapes onto the wall and beyond the glass’ edge.

5. Space – Finally, boundaries make space. Take for example the walls defining the room. No matter how large it is, the boundaries can easily heighten up the room. If there are air ducts or moldings, then you can accentuate the area you want to focus on by placing furniture near the window treatment. Space pretty much influences the details and the kind of design you would want to use for your window treatment.

The relaxed, country style appeal of the Tuscan interior design style exudes a warm and cheerful atmosphere in any part of the home. For these reasons, this style has enjoyed tremendous popularity over the years, especially in the kitchen. Its hallmark characteristic is its rustic charm derived from objects that are easily found in the rolling hills of the wine-producing Italian countryside. From painting your walls a light beige to hanging simple metal wall artworks, you too can have a Tuscan kitchen!

When one thinks of the Tuscan countryside, two things immediately come to mind: food and wine. These are the two basic features of the Italian country lifestyle. In decorating your kitchen, you don’t need to be too literal in transferring this design aesthetic in your home. What you can do is borrow some of the more obvious elements and give them a unique interpretation while still adhering to the basic design features. For example, given the integral role of wine, you can add touches of leaf-inspired designs like those found in metal artworks such as wall grilles and wine racks. For those who want to evoke the same rustic appeal in their kitchens, we have created a simple list of must-have design elements to create a Tuscan-inspired kitchen.

Colors: Given that the rustic farmhouses of the Tuscan region are traditionally made out of ubiquitous materials, the color palette therefore uses more warm, natural, and earthy tones such as beige, light yellow, brown, and white among others. In your kitchen, you can easily incorporate this by painting walls in these colors, using matching cookware in the same color palette, or showcasing a prominent display of crockery in open shelves and other clearly visible areas. Take note that the colors should not be limited to just this color scheme; unless you want your kitchen to look monochromatic and boring, consider adding splashes of red, mustard, or lavender here and there.

Fabrics: Wherever possible, use fabrics that are reminiscent of those used in the countryside. As a rule, cotton and lace are the typical fabrics used in Tuscan-style interior design. For the more traditional ones, revel in using dainty lace curtains and tablecloths as well as beige damasks and chintz. However, if you are not particularly fond of these difficult to maintain fabrics, limit the inspiration to just the windows. This will give the same effect. In choosing curtains and draperies, you may use those with colors such as those mentioned above. For the bolder ones, feel free to use rust, deep cherry, and bright yellow.

Accent Pieces: In the old times, accessories found in an Italian country home should be practical and built to last. Simplicity was the norm. Thus, it was not uncommon for kitchens to dominantly feature simple metal or wooden wine racks. However, if you do not have the space nor the inclination to collect wines, you can simply choose to hang copper pots, handmade baskets or ornate wall grilles. The deep, earthy colors and leaf-inspired designs of these metal artworks can easily fit into a Tuscan-inspired kitchen.

In today’s world, the kitchen is more often than not viewed as just another place to complete chores that can be crossed off a never-ending to-do list.  While this is certainly understandable, one of the most highly-trafficked rooms in the home does not deserve to be regarded in this manner.  A kitchen should be viewed as an artistic venue, as a place where a person can learn to express his or her visions or personality in a unique format.  Sure, this can be done through foods and cooking, but it can also be done through kitchen decorating.

There are a variety of ways to spruce up the look of your kitchen.  Regardless of the style of kitchen, a few constant pieces can infuse immediate flair into this space.  From a plethora of practical accents to a soothing or bright color scheme, the options for adding character to your kitchen are endless.  Quite often today, kitchens boast a country theme with modern and updated appliances in the mix.  Merging the best of both worlds is a task that can easily be achieved with the right details.  Some of these details may include wall paintings, scented candles, and the natural smells of your favorite meals.

Aside from scents, let’s start from the ground up – wedges and accent rugs.  There are a variety of uniquely themed wedge rugs available today.  From fruit-themed wedges to those boasting prints of chefs and coffee cups to sunflowers and much more, the range of rug product designed to enhance the look of your kitchen is decorative, creative, and practical.  Moreover, adding a rug runner, round rug, or octagonal rug can infuse unique style into your space while also delivering an element of warmth and comfort to the kitchen.

Consider the vast amount of kitchen accents available in today’s market.  Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere can be done quite simply when tying your theme together with ideal accents.  If you’re trying to achieve a country theme, then the possibilities are endless.  From canister sets to rooster-themed wall clocks, a country-style bread box, mug tree, paper towel and napkin holder, matching accents have been designed with your needs in mind.  Further, kitchen accessories like oven mitts, pot holders, towels, placemats and chair pads can typically be customized to boast the same pattern or are already available in proper sets.   Your biggest challenge should be finding the theme that will enable you to work tirelessly in your kitchen, so that you’re finally able to enjoy it for its versatility instead of dislike it for its typical association.

Moving on from accents, consider unifying the overall theme of your kitchen by adding matching kitchen curtains and valance.  Find kitchen curtains that can enhance your accents while simultaneously boasting a bright color scheme to create a light and happy mood within your space.  Yellows, light greens, light blues, and ivories work well in kitchens where people are hoping to create brighter and more relaxing atmospheres.  From themes of vintage wine bottles to fruits, roosters, and more basic patterns, there are a variety of kitchen curtain options to peruse.

Decorating your kitchen does not need to be a difficult task.  It should be a fun and creative way to enhance an otherwise drab space.  Just be sure to choose the accents and décor that will reflect your personality and help to transform your kitchen into your own, artistic area!

Spring is the perfect time to get rid of the old and bring in the new. Spring cleaning has taken over our homes.  Along with spring cleaning comes fresh new home decor. The winter decor has been neatly put away in the closet for next year.  Homes have been redecorated with freshly bright colors and designs.  With so many styles today, which one is best for the bedroom? Believe it or not, plaid duvet covers have become one of the favorite bedding pieces for this spring.  Something about it makes many of us think of the country.  If you live in the big city and want to bring back a touch of the country to your home, then plaid duvet bedding is your best choice. We picture the country life with bright sunny skies, freshly cut lawns and beautiful gardens.  Green and yellow plaid duvet covers represents the same thing.  These two colors are the most popular plaid colors in duvet bedding today.  The green reminds us of nature. The trees and flowers.  The yellow represents the bright yellow sun.

The best decor to use with this type of duvet cover is fresh flowers and hanging plants by the bed.  Flowers always brighten up any bedroom and reminds of us the beautiful flowers of the country gardens. Place some of the flowers in a wooden baskets for a more beautiful effect.  Pull back cotton curtains with ties.  You can either match the curtain with the same pattern as the bedding and place a solid color valance over the curtain or just use a solid color curtain with matching valance. You do not have to necessarily go with yellow or green this spring .  Any color would look fine.  Use woven or braided rugs on the floor for a more homey feeling. Finish the walls off with coordinating pastel colors to complete the new spring plaid look,

Bring the beauty and warmth into your home with our prints, rustic decor, home furnishings and kitchenware. From whimsical to dramatic, you’ll find something to please everyone in your family with rustic home furnishings.

For many city dwellers, rustic home furnishings are a way to escape the hectic urban lifestyle for the peaceful tranquility of rural living. When it’s impossible to leave the corporate rat race behind, an urban apartment or city house decorated in rustic home furnishings can be a relaxing place to unwind after a stressful day at the office.

Country decorating utilizes natural materials as much as possible and decorative items that look handmade even when they aren’t. Wooden floors may be polished to sheen, yet have characteristic marks from decades of being walked on. Braided rugs are scattered about, providing texture and warmth. The walls may be painted in neutral shades or earth tones, or perhaps papered in small floral patterns or bold country motifs.

For those living on country farms or in mountain cabins, the rustic decorating style is a natural choice that showcases the tradition of a farming heritage. And for those who live in-between, the suburbanites, upscale country home furnishings can provide a comfortable gathering place for family and friends to enjoy each other’s company, or to relax after a long commute.

Popular designs incorporate such elements as apples, floral wreaths, roosters, birdhouses, hearts, and Americana folk art for borders or to be used either above or below chair railing or crown molding. Wide borders with bold patterns complement smaller matching designs, checks, stripes, or plaids that can be used for larger wall areas.

A bear or moose motif may be used with more rustic home furnishings to create a log cabin ambience or to bring the feel of wilderness living into the dwelling. Chandeliers that look like wagon wheels or that are made from antlers, whether authentic fixtures or reproductions, are common lighting elements for rustic decorating.

From moose wall plates and elk switch plates, to bear coat hooks and deer towel bars, loon key holders and pinecone or leaf curtain swag holders, we are your source for rustic metal art decor featuring wildlife and fish themes for decorating your log home, lodge, cottage and log cabin.

A dark brown leather sofa fits perfectly in a country theme, especially when teamed up with either complementary or contrasting upholstered chairs. Comfort is a primary factor when it comes to selecting seating for the rustic dwelling. Throw pillows and curtains can be made from the same fabric to add a unified look to the room, though window shutters are an innovative alternative to traditional drapes when it comes to window treatments.

A stack of folded quilts, perhaps piled in an open trunk or a large basket, invites family and friends to wrap themselves up on chilly evenings while watching television or reading a good book. Or handmade afghans can be draped over the back of the sofa and chairs. Such simple decorating elements provide a hospitable feel to a family room. Baskets, in a variety of shapes and sizes, are also an integral element of country decorating whether handmade or mass-produced. To add additional interest, baskets can be lined with calico prints or trimmed in lace, filled with balls of yarn and embroidery projects, or hold freshly baked cookies for mid-afternoon snacking.

Another idea for bringing elements of nature into the house is to arrange a small collection of bird houses on a plant shelf or countertop. Other collectibles can also be displayed, perhaps rag dolls or stuffed teddy bears.
