First, un-package your treatment carefully and do NOT use a razor blade or knife to open the boxes. It is very easy to cut a string or the blind by doing this. Take care when removing the treatment from the box that it was shipped in; some treatments are more delicate than others. Remove all of the packing that was used in shipping, again taking care to do so. Place the treatment at the window that it will be installed; this helps if there are several treatments for different windows as not to get them mixed up. Then place all mounting hardware at the windows that are having treatments installed on them. Make sure you have the proper tools for the job, as screws and hardware will vary.

Horizontal blinds: Install brackets making sure you use the proper bracket for the proper side (some have left and right brackets, and some do not). After the bracket is installed, open the brackets by lifting the bracket doors. Put blind in the brackets and close doors, making sure both sides are securely closed. If blind has a valance place valance clips on head rail before putting blind in brackets. Attach valance to blind headrail. Lower blind using the lift cord, and then rotate the blind in both directions to insure that it operates correctly.

Window Shades: Install shade brackets. Snap shade into place. (Because shades and brackets vary, refer to installation instructions that came with your shades). Lower the shade by pulling on the shade lift cord. This is usually done by pulling the shade lift cord to the left to release it, and to the right to lock it.

Vertical Blinds: For inside mount verticals mount the valance first. (Some valances may require trimming first). Mount brackets under valance in the proper position to allow slats to move without interfering with valance. Snap track into place. Hang the slats and make sure they all snap securely in place. Attach cord tension pulley to the wall and adjust tension so that it is secure but not tight.

For outside mount verticals: Measure to the spot you measured for the bracket to be, and make a mark. Using the top screw hole of the bracket, fasten a screw in the top hole where you made your mark. Place another screw in bottom hole. Center track over window and snap it into place, making sure that it is properly secure. Attach slats, making sure that each one is properly attached. Snap the valance brackets onto head rail if they do not have them built into the brackets. Center valance over the vertical track and place into valance holder. (Some valances may require a slight tap with the butt of your palm to secure). Mount the tension pulley to the wall and adjust the tension so it is secure but not tight. Draw blinds back and forth, and rotate them to assure that they are functioning properly.

Tips & Warnings

Although no special tools are usually required when installing window treatments, it is suggested that you use a battery operated screwdriver or drill to make the job easier.
Never use a razor knife to open boxes as you could cut the blind and damage it.

Things You’ll Need:

A battery operated screwdriver
Screwdriver bits (Phillips and standard)
Hex head driver
Tape measure
Scissors

Brief History and Types of Curtains

Curtains, also known as drapes or drapery, is a piece of fabric whose uses are to block light, drafts, water, and even prevent heat from going out the room. Curtains have the same purpose as with the window blinds. Both of them give you a sense of privacy. Their only difference is that curtains can be used in the shower area, hang before the door, hang on an arch, and can be used for theatrical purposes.

Types of Curtains
Voiles – They are made of lightweight fabrics. They are usually found in tropical countries. They are easy to clean and easy to put up.

Lace – They have a classic style to them. They can soften sunlight and are usually partnered with heavier fabrics since they are see-through.

Shower Curtains – They are used in the shower area of a bathroom. They provide privacy while preventing water from spraying all over the bathroom.

Brief History
Decorating the place where we live in has become a natural part of mankind. Like the desert dwellers that use wet cloth to cover their windows for protection against the heat and dust while cooling off their homes. Fabric curtains were also used for theatrical purposes.

During the Middle Age, fabric was so expensive that only the upper class uses them as curtains. Then in the Industrial Era, the development of textile trade drove fabric prices down making fabric curtains available to most people.

When the glass industry came, houses were installed with glass windows requiring fabric curtains or window blinds to protect the people inside from heat and drafts. This is also to keep prying eyes off.

Fabric manufacturers increased their production and lowered their prices as the demand for it greatly increased. This paved the way for the common person to buy their own fabric curtains.

When China opened its door to international markets, fabric production shifted to Asia because of the large labor force and low wages. This made fabric to go cheaper making fabric curtains available to anyone who can buy it.

As technology grows, there are now different materials in manufacturing curtains. Different print, patterns, and colors are now available in the market. In most Asian countries, it is popular to have your curtains customized according to the size of the windows and doors.

Fabric curtains bring elegance to any room. Heavier fabrics are mostly used in countries with colder temperature while lighter ones are common in tropical countries. When choosing curtains, always keep in mind the style of the room you’re going to put it in.

Window Treatments = Lower Heating Bills

The temperatures hit their lowest points for the first time this Winter here in the North-East. We even got our first snow dusting a few days ago. And of course it’s no news that the energy costs are on the rise. So I thought it’s just ever so timely that today we talk about energy efficient window treatments.

Did you know that in a typical home, windows account for nearly 50% of the heat gain and loss? Though windows are a beautiful feature in any home, they can also account for 10% to 25% of our bills. Since it costs the average American home about $1,000 to heat the house, that’s up to $225 going right out the window! Also during the summer, air conditioners must work harder to cool hot air from sunny windows, eating much more energy and driving up costs. Ah, those windows – can’t live with them, can’t live without them…

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “you can choose window treatments or coverings not only for decoration but also for saving energy.” So you see, I didn’t say it, the Energy Department did. Naturally, I second it. Window treatments are an excellent way to save energy. They provide insulation during the cold winter months as well as repel the heat during the summer.

There are two important concepts to take away (if you want to get just a bit technical here). The first is “the shading coefficient”. The Shading Coefficient is a measure of the ability of the window treatment to reduce solar heat gain. The lower the number, the less solar heat will enter your home and the lower your cooling bill will be. Conversely, there is another concept, called the R-value. The R-value is the measure of material’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the more the material insulates, the lower your heating bill will be. Phew, now that we are done with this fun part, let’s talk some specifics.

There are several window covering options that maximize the energy efficiency of a home.

Blinds can reduce heat gain by as much as 45%. It is a practical option that gives you air and light flow, works to minimize harmful summer sun radiation, and maximizes heat retention in the winter.

Cellular shades (also referred to as honeycomb shades, if you remember last article) is arguably best option to increase the energy efficiency of your home. Referring back to the trusted U.S. Department of Energy, the website states that, “when properly installed, window shades can be one of the simplest and most effective window treatments for saving energy.” Their unique construction literally traps the air in the cells: so cold air can’t enter, while heated inside air can’t escape. Better yet, cell shades 100% of U.V. rays that can fade and damage your furniture and flooring.

Traversing draperies will trap most of the air when kept closed. As you know, all custom draperies are lined (unless they are meant to be sheers), so, similar to the cell shades from above, the air gets trapped not only by one layer of fabric, but by two! Of course, the further out your draperies clear your window on the sides, the better their insulative qualities are.

You may be in the position where blinds, shades, or draperies are just not an option for your home. If that’s your situation, consider window film. It’s a unique and least obtrusive way to drop your energy costs, prevent fading, and stop other sun damage.

Here are a couple more simple tips to keeping the energy costs down:

* During winter, keep the shades or blinds on south-facing windows open during the day to allow sunlight and heat to enter the home.

* Close blinds and shades at night to help reduce heat loss. Also, when closing blinds, you’ll maximize insulation if you close the blinds with the leading edge up.

* During summer, keep the window coverings closed during the day to prevent the sun from heating the home.

* And of course, be sure to caulk and weather-strip around the windows, to reduce air leakage or infiltration.

Country home decorating is a popular decorating style that has stood up to the test of time. Take pleasure in the simplicity and appeal of country home decorating no matter where you live–it is all about feeling relaxed and peaceful. Ideas for adding that look of country to your home include:

Vintage Fabrics – They are marvelous collectibles because of their creative, imaginative patterns. Also, the softness and pliability that comes with years of use provides that comfortable, relaxed look. Use vintage fabric scrapes for pillow covers, curtains, decorative table runners and doilies, quilt pieces, covering photo frames, drawstring gift bags, small purses, pot holders and oven mitts. Be sure and shop for fabrics that are in good condition and have minimum stains.

Dried Flowers and Potpourri – An easy way to add beauty to your country home decorating idea is to use dried flowers and potpourri. Flowers are easy to dry by hanging them in a bunch upside down in a dry, dark room that is well-ventilated. Then stand them up in plastic foam until they are used in an arrangement or in potpourri.

Antique Daybeds – Daybeds are described as any type of seating with the main purpose of daytime rest. They have been around for centuries. What a wonderful way to add country home décor to your home and at the same time add another sleeping area!

Paint By Numbers – Yes, the popular 1950’s paint by numbers is alive and well. Even though the craze seemed to fade away in the 1960’s, today it is coming back as collectors view paint by numbers as historic folk art. Look in flea markets, garage sales, thrift shops and on the Internet for these country home décor treasures and give your home a truly timeless country look.

Beautiful Style on a Budget

With fall and winter months finding you indoors more than any other season of the year, it’s the perfect time to redecorate your home! There are many ways to save BIG money on beautifying your home, and we will go over a few of those here.

The first thing you will need to do is find a starting point. If you have a plan from the beginning, you will be able to figure out what your costs are going to be and stick to a budget, saving lots of time and money in the process.

The basics of decorating your home are style, color and formality. You will definitely want to decide what colors and style you want to use ahead of time. Make sure the decor you decide on is going to make you and your family happy and comfortable, as well as making your home beautiful!

Let’s start with color. You probably already know what your favorite colors are, but it you’re having trouble deciding, look at a few magazines to get some ideas. If that doesn’t work, pick your favorite color and mix it with white – this always works well.

Next, what is your decorating style? Do you love western decor, country farmhouse style, Asian or something else? Some people like the eclectic style where you mix a little of everything. That is fine too, as long as you have a focal point to guide everything else. Get an idea of the feeling you want for the room, such as rich and warm (this is perfect for rustic style), or

bright and sunny (farmhouse). This will help you make the perfect choices for your room.

Next, do you love the formal look, or maybe you’re the type that likes the relaxed, lived-in look. Make absolutely sure that you stick with the formal or informal look and feel that you like! You will never feel comfortable in a formal room if you are drawn to the easy, lived-in look and vice versa. You always want to be happy and relaxed in your home, so formality is very important!

Creating a beautiful room can easily be done on a very limited budget. These days, you can use flat bed sheets for just about anything! Pick a patterned sheet with colors you are using in your newly decorated room. Use them for curtains and table covers. For instance, if you are decorating in Shabby Chic style, a sheet with small pastel colored flowers would look gorgeous on your windows! Western decor your style? Use rich, bold striped sheets to add a punch of color to your room.

You can paint just about anything these days! Have furniture that doesn’t match in color? Just paint it all to match. With a little sanding and painting, you can transform all of your tables, wooden chairs, shelves or whatever you have into a gorgeous, matching set. And if you want to lighten up that dark room, paint your furniture a pastel color or white – you won’t believe the difference it will make.

Last but not least, if you need new or different furniture, that is pretty easy to find also. Look at flea markets, garage sales, and online. There are many places online that you can find new furniture at wholesale prices, or even cheaper! Check the online auctions – there is always an abundance of furniture there. Throw in a few accents for the walls and tables, and you’re done! You can make some of these accents yourself, or buy them at a discount crafts store. There are many ways to find affordable accents for your rooms.

Use some of these suggestions along with your own unique ideas, and you will soon find that you have a gorgeous, totally redecorated room that didn’t cost you an arm and a leg! And the great thing is that it will look like you spent a fortune.

Even if you have the most beautiful furnishings, but the windows aren’t done right, the room will feel incomplete. Something will be off. Here is a simple 3-part checklist to follow in finding the right window treatments for your style. Balance. Usually, our rooms are naturally busy at the bottom. Meaning, there is your carpet or area rug, sofa, chairs, tv stand, coffee table, plants, etc, etc. While the top of the room is usually empty. To quote a client: “The eyebrows are missing” I thought her comment was brilliant. Think of it as if you were wearing rich, colorful lipstick – but no make-up on your eyes, so they are barely visible. We don’t want that. What we want is a balanced look, where all elements work in unison, whether on the face or in the room. Proper Scale of Statement. Adding valances to your windows or treating them with curtains, is not synonymous with overdoing it. We are not talking window treatments during the times for Louis IV, when everything was over the top, plush, and luxurious. The window treatments need to make the same statement as the rest of the furnishings in the room. This statement includes: design style, color, and physical proportions. Here, there is no need to overthink it. If you have minimalistic décor – don’t go with over the top curtains. If your color pallet is monochromatic, no need to make bold statements with your curtains. Functionality. Every window treatment has its purpose, regardless of whether the purpose is functional or aesthetic. For example, if your primary goal for doing the window treatments was to block the glare on the TV, be sure to consult the professional that your selection will do just that. Similarly, if you’re trying to minimize the appearance of a window treatment, it’s a good idea to go with shades, not blinds. Make sure you know the pros and cons of each type of treatment. While your selection may not perfectly address all your requirements, at least it will be the optimal one – the one that addresses most of them or those that are most important. How do you learn the pros and cons? Research. So how will you know that the end result is the right one? Your goal is to feel cozy, warm, and soft. You want the room to have the feeling of being pulled together. A sense of being complete. If you at least follow this simple 3-part check list, you’ll know you’re on the right path.

Ideas For Home Decorating Styles

There are many home decorating styles that people adopt. Much of it is determined by personal preference, but some of it is adopted because people want to sell their property. Some home decorating is completely modern with plain wood or laminate flooring throughout and perhaps a fully tiled bathroom and of course a fully fitted kitchen. This decorating style is often adopted by, or appeals to the young professional who wants their home to be functional yet stylish.

Some people’s home decorating styles tend towards the country cottage with lots of chintzy curtains and big soft cushions. Large kitchens are a favorite for this style because people can eat in a warm, bright room that is hung with pots and brightened by plants. Many people long to come home to a warm and welcoming kitchen and a comfortable sitting room, they are more interested in comfort than style. This type of home decorating style usually suits a family who want their home to fit around their lifestyle and accommodate their hobbies and projects.

Home decorating styles may vary, depending on what kind of life you lead and where you live. In some areas there is a tendency for residents to adopt similar styles of decoration rather than having an eclectic mix.

There are plenty of television programs around that show you how to decorate your home with style – a lot depends on whether your idea of style is the same as the designer’s idea of style. Mirrors and plush fabrics seem to be a prominent feature of this style of home decoration. Feature walls are also a must. With this style three walls may be painted and a fourth wall is made into a feature with some (usually expensive) wallpaper that tones with the paint.

You can still see home decorating styles that hark back to the days of hippies and often mean that the home owner has an artistic turn. Here you will see tiffany lamps, floor cushions and bright colors. Homes decorated in this way can have a warm and welcoming feel or they can be over bright with furniture, fittings and carpets all screaming for the visitor’s attention.

Home decorating styles are largely a result of people’s vision of the type of life they would like to live. Some like a neutral background where they can add possessions and brighten the style with accessories. Still others like a home to be bright and bustling and their decorating style will reflect this. Whatever you choose in home decorating styles, you should make sure that it is something you will be happy to live with for an extended period of time.

Among the difficulties in home design is coming across a theme that will work well for every season. Unluckily, experts have not yet developed such a design theme—almost every theme out in the market has some flaws. Zen design, for example, works well in the summer, but tends to go too plain during the winter. Cabin-style country homes are appealing to winter lovers, but they don’t work well to summer heat.

So how to put up a theme that’ll hold up all year round? You do not have to redecorate your house each year in order to keep up with the seasons—all it takes is a few simple adjustments. Here’s a quick guide to help you get started.

Summer: Summer is all about keeping cool and fighting off the heat and making use of the natural, rich light. The first thing you should do is open up your windows. This will let large amounts of sunlight spill into your room and keep the hot air flowing out, so your house is often ventilated and well-lit. If you reside in a hot, humid area, you might consider investing in an air conditioner for use those very hot days.

When it comes to design, it is very good to make use of cool colors which provide some contrast to the hot weather. Delicate, flowy fabrics act as a good design element—use them as curtains, sofa drapes, or even as tablecloths and doorknob wraps.

Spring: During spring, you would like something that is airy and light, much like a summer house but having more open space. The point is to bring in as much of the outdoors as possible inside your house, or at least enjoy the wonderful views it offers. If you possess a balcony, porch, or deck, this is just the perfect time to liven them up and transform them into an excellent afternoon hangout.

Most design themes will work great during spring, because it is the most balanced of all the seasons. Try accenting your windows by making use of stylish curtains or leaving them bare to maximize the view.

Autumn: Designing for the fall involves two things: basking in the majestic autumn landscapes, and making preparations for the coming of winter. You can begin by preparing your fireplace—you will need to get it in great condition when the first snow sets in. You will probably be making use of it increasingly often as the season goes on and it becomes colder.

Autumn colors are naturally suitable for this season. Reds, yellows and oranges work well to complement the infamous autumn leaves, and their warm shades provide a nice contrast to the cold. You do not need to make them the theme of your abode; just use them as accents such as curtains, colored pillows, and rugs.

Winter: “Winterizing” your abode is all about staying warm and wrapping up. There are quite a number of ways to go about this without losing your home’s sense of style. For example, it is the perfect time to accentuate your fireplace and make it your room’s focal point. Design it with a large area rug and it’ll be a nice decorative touch, as well as a comfy sitting area.

Majority of hues will work great during winter, although it’s best to stay away from lifeless colors such as brown, gray, and black. Add some vibrancy to the cold season by putting a few splashes of color in—a vibrant red curtain, a textured rug, a pastel drape over your couch.
